Q1. What do you understand by ‘Standard Positioning Systems’ and ‘Protection Positioning Systems’ in the GPS era? Discuss the advantages India perceives from its ambitious IRNSS programme employing just seven satellites.

    GPS has a combined effort of over 5 decades supported by the 38 satellites all around the globe. One such service of GPS is Standard positioning system, which is provided for public use. Special service providing accuracy is the protection positioning system, used by military or other authorized services.

    India’s IRNSS programme aims at providing navigation system for both public and special security users like military. India’s own navigation system will be unique and advantageous in it’s own ways:

    1. Emergencies like war are always costly in various angles of country reputation, security, future relations. Relying on GPS during emergency is risky for India. IRNSS is great beneficiary in emergency situations.

    2. Any denial in service or hostile situation with US can save India from crucial navigation system, which is used in devices ranging from phones to missiles.

    3. Indian scientists claim the service to show precise location on low end devices also, which is not present in GPS. It is surely to help Indian users, and will increase daily life application of the service.

    4. Using IRNSS based devices for government based services like police, agriculture, disaster management and others can increase its applications.

    Considering the accuracy, spread of other navigation systems of China, Russia and Europe aiming for their domination in commercial services is difficult. But, India having its own unique position within sub-continent a regional navigation system is highly beneficial.
