.In my opinion, the magnitude of poverty decline in India is significant but not dramatic.
.Since independence, India has managed to reduce poverty to a considerable level but it is only since 1975, after the rate of growth accelerated, the decline in poverty has been fairly steady.
.India’s poverty continues to be predominantly rural although rural poverty has declined faster than urban poverty.
.The pace, moreover, remains both slow and uneven. It is faster in the southern states than the northern ones, and more likely to empower men than women.
.Government efforts to reduce poverty through direct anti-interventions have yielded mixed results.
.Many of those programs, in fact, have missed their supposed target i.e. the poor. These programs have delivered their benefits to the economically more advantaged.
.However, as per the latest National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), poverty levels across India decreased by 15 percentage points — approximately 2 percentage year over year — between 2004-05 and 2011-12.
.Experts say that this is the outcome of the trickle-down impact of the record growth witnessed in the first decade of the new millennium.
    Conclusion:
As India moves ahead with the economic liberalization that has yielded a higher platform for growth, it should re-examine its approach to reduce poverty.
