    GS1 question solved:
Q1. Sufis and medieval mystic saints failed to modify either the religious ideas and practices or the outward structure of Hindu / Muslim societies to any appreciable extent. Comment. [10 marks/2014/GS-1]

Sufis and medieval mystic saints failed to modify the religious ideas or the outward structure of Hindu / Muslim socities to any appreciable extent due to following reasons:
    1. Sufis and saints preached local people and moved from one place to another. Due to this nomadic nature, they could not leave long lasting impact.
    2. Moreover they failed to create institutional structure and so the message was forgotten by audience.
    3. Gradually, these movements evolved as Guru-Shishya practices thereby increasing factionist tendencies, competition etc.
    4. The lack of lineage of saints also created conflicting movements.
    5. Although they criticized the existing social order but they did not offer any alternative to it. So it remained like identifying a problem without any solution.
    6. Their followers were poor belonging to the lower strata of the society having neither the power nor the courage to revolt against the settled system.
    7. Different saints suggested different paths hence there was no uniformity in their preaching.
    8. Some Sufi saints like Chistis had Mughal patronage due to which they had uneven influence in social and cultural life.
    9. The sole objective of Sufis and saints was to propagate the ideas of devotion to God and recitation within worldly affairs. They never made attempts to work for the modification of societies.
    10. All these factors together acted as dampners for modifying religious ideas and practices or the outward structure of Hindu / Muslim societies to any appreciable extent.
