Q1. “Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, but knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.” What do you understand by this statement? Explain your stand with illustrations from the modern context. [10marks/2014/GS-4] 150 words.

    Q1. “Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, but knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful.” What do you understand by this statement? Explain your stand with illustrations from the modern context.
    My answer:

    Explanation of the given statement on integrity and knowledge:
    1. The above statement was quoted by Samuel Johnson.
    2. According to him, integrity requires you to know before you speak something.
    3. If you do not know, you have very little integrity to start with.
    4. Integrity is defined as who you are and knowledge is defined as what you know.
    5. Integrity without knowledge provides good intentions without desirable results & Knowledge without integrity produces unexpected results.
    6. In ethics, integrity is regarded as honesty, truthfulness, accuracy of one’s action and one’s action can be accurate only if he has adequate knowledge.
    7. Even if you know everything, it does not mean that you will speak the truth, or use knowledge with intelligence.
    8. If a person has knowledge but no integrity then it is dangerous, as is decision making will not be guided by integrity and would result in dreadful results for the society.
    9. Wisdom is knowing the right path to take and integrity is taking that path.
    10. President Roosevelt stated it best when he said, “To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society”

    Illustrations from the modern context:
    1. In modern context most of the common men have integrity but they are illiterate. They do not have a voice backed by knowledge against corrupt politicians and public officials.
    2. Abdul Karim Telgi, earned money by printing counterfeit stamp paper showing use of knowledge without integrity.
    3. Ketan Parekh a former stock broker was convicted, for involvement in the Indian stock market manipulation scam.
    4. Ramalinga Raju resigned from the Satyam board after admitting to faking revenues, margins and over crores of cash balances of the company.

      Harshad Mehta’s example can also be stated. Even sportspersons doing match fixing can be stated as knowledge without integrity. Like Srisanth.. he he..
