Ethics as a moral discourse pushes for critical inquiry by a moral aspirant in order to uncover the highest ideals. To promote this critical nature, one needs to develop rational thinking in his/her daily endeavors.
Rational thinking refers to structural logical approach of mental thinking which is oriented for a critical outlook of the world in which we live. It involves emphasis on reason rather than passion and stands for removing misrepresentations and misinterpretations.
According to Socrates, unexamined life is not worth living. One needs to engage in dialectics to acquire true knowledge associated with a good life. Good life precedes success whose precondition is virtue and knowledge is virtue. Plato envisaged an ideal state governed by a philosopher king whose most important quality is reason.
I believe in the rational conception of man given by John Locke who postulated that man, while being self-centered, has reason guiding him that it is in his/her interest to look after the interests of other people. Rationality has instrumentalist as well as intrinsic dimensions which includes controlling emotional as well as cognitive component.
Example- Criticizing the intention behind the demonetisation move carried out by GoI is irrational as the government enjoys the authority to do so. Alternatively, it is our duty to point out the lacuna in the implementation strategy of the proposed move for nation building requires constructive actions.
